Current Wildfire Activity in NITHA Communities – July 6, 2026
Reporting Period: Next 48-72 Hours
Current Situation Overview
- Active Fire Status: Over 25 active wildfires are currently burning in the Eastern and North Eastern Sectors, serving as the primary smoke source.
- Affected Area: Low to moderate smoke coverage is present from Prince Albert north to the northern provincial border.
- 48-Hour Forecast: Prevailing weather patterns indicate a general smoke flow traveling from East to West over the next 48 hours.
- Air Quality Monitoring: PurpleAir monitors across partner communities indicate that smoke levels have not reached alarmingly high or sustained thresholds at this time.
- Health System Capacity: No health facilities within the Partnership are experiencing capacity issues. All local clinics and hospitals remain fully operational and capable of assessing smoke-related concerns.
Community Specifics:
Due to their closer proximity to the active regional fires, the following communities may experience higher concentrated bursts of smoke:
- Southend
- Hatchet Lake
- Black Lake
- Kinoosao
- Sandy Bay
- Fond Du Lac
Note on Modeling: Current predictive models indicate that these high smoke levels are not expected to settle into these areas for prolonged periods over the next 48 hours. The situation is being monitored closely.
Health Recommendations & Actions (Next 72 Hours)
In coordination with environmental modeling teams, the following official health recommendations are in effect:
- Sensitive Individuals: Elders, children, pregnant individuals, and those with pre-existing respiratory or cardiac conditions should remain indoors during periods of heavier smoke.
- Symptom Monitoring: Community members should closely monitor themselves and family members for symptoms like persistent coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath. Seek advice from a local healthcare provider immediately if symptoms develop.
- Evacuation Status: Current environmental models do not support or warrant large-group evacuations based on smoke conditions alone.
Proactive Community Support & Protective Steps
NITHA is actively working to mitigate indoor air quality risks across partner communities through the following measures:
- Fresh-Air Shelters: Designated clean air facilities have been successfully established in multiple communities to provide a safe reprieve from the smoke.
- Air Filtration: High-efficiency home air purifiers (HEPA) have been deployed and made available to several vulnerable individuals.
